Murray Bridge War Memorial Print Page
The gallantry, courage and sacrifice of the Murray Bridge region's service men and women has been honoured in style at a new war memorial at Sturt Reserve. The new memorial was unveiled on Sunday, November 1 and officially opened by Member for Barker Tony Pasin.Work on the $250,000 project started in May and was made possible through $200,000 in Federal funding with a $50,000 contribution from the Rural City of Murray Bridge.
Attending Sunday's ceremony, Governor of South Australia Hieu Van Le paid tribute to the service men and women the monument honours. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the memorial had been built and designed in consultation with the Murray Bridge Returned Services League.
Rural City of Murray Bridge Mayor Brenton Lewis said it was important for the community to have an accessible and permanent site where people could come together in remembrance. At the ceremony, Mayor Lewis said the old monument in Diamond Park, which hosted Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services had become obsolete because of traffic issues with large crowds, so it was no longer fit for purpose. Mayor Lewis said the new war memorial project was embedded into the council's larger riverfront plans as part of the Sturt Reserve Master Plan tourism and history precinct. Ngarrindjeri man Clyde Rigney Senior performed the welcome to country.
