The sculpture is a tribute to veterans whose service inspired the original hospital which was built in memory of those from Rochester and District who served in World War Two. The figures of the soldier and nurse symbolise those who have served in conflict. The nurse depicts so many who sacrificed so much to ensure the welfare of wounded soldiers.
The sculpture was created with a grant from the Victorian Government as part of the ANZAC Centenary.

In Caring Hands
Rochester and District War Memorial Hospital was established in 1952 as a tribute to those who served in World War Two.
A name change followed amalgamation with Elmore District Hospital in 1993 but the focus on providing quality health care to residents of the local community did not change. A grant from the Victorian Government in 2016 provided a further opportunity to create a further tribute to those veterans whose service inspired the original hospital.
Richard Yates, a sculptor from Chewton, was commissioned to create life-size figures of a nurse and a soldier. His skill when working with timber has been widely acclaimed but his passion for detail became evident as the project progressed from planning to execution and finally, delivery. The excellence of his work is a fitting tribute to those whom we seek to honour.
Figures of a soldier and a nurse symbolise much to those who have served in conflict. Hospitals are havens of healing and sanctuaries of safety, security and succour to those who have been wounded in combat. A soldier walking out of this hospital denotes recovery, rehabilitation and return to normal life and health. The nurse depicts so many who sacrificed so much to ensure the welfare of our wounded personnel of all services.
So many nurses sacrificed their own safety, security and even their lives as they served to protect their patients. These figures individually represent many men and women of Rochester and District who have served this nation. Jointly, it can be seen that a veteran is "In Caring Hands" as a consequence of his service.
The citizens of this community can see that they are "In Caring Hands" in the future because of this facility which honours those who have served in the past.
