The carved oak Gothic altar and reredros commemorates those from the church who served in World War One and World War Two.

It was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. The reredros contains brass plaques erected by the parents to their family members who died. In 1920 an altar cross was placed on the memorial and additional plaques were placed above the altar at a later date to commemorate those who served and died in World War Two.

Note : The names of the World War One soldiers commemorated are found in the attached PDF document.

Next Sunday will be a great day at St. John's Church of England. At eleven o'clock there will be the special dedication and unveiling of the Church's Soldiers' War Memorial which, we understand, has cost over £200, comprising a carved oak Gothic altar and reredos with altar sidewings containing 16 brass memorial tablets. It is the gift to the Church of the parents of the soldiers who died in the war. The service is more of a soldiers' national service, and they are to take a prominent part. Two are taking part in the unveiling ceremony, and two are sounding "The Last Post." All returned soldiers are especially asked to attend in uniform at the drill hall at half past ten for a voluntary Church parade, and, led by the Bega Town Band, will march to the church to pay respect and remembrance at the service to the memory of their fallen comrades.

The Venerable Archdeacon Ward, Chaplain Captain of the A.I.F. will officiate and preach at the service. He is known to all the returned soldiers, having addressed them in nearly every military camp in England, France, Belgium, and Egypt. The order of the service, with the hymns used, is fully printed in book form for the use of the congregation. The parish Peace thank-offering will be made at the service as an offering of gratitude to Almighty God for our preservation and safety, and the safe return of the sons of Australia to their homes. At the evening service on Sunday, the Rector will dedicate a carved oak Gothic litany prayer desk, a memorial gift for use in the services of the Church.

An impressive service was held in St. John's Church on Sunday, when three additional memorial tablets erected by the parents to the memory of their sons who died in the Great War were dedicated and unveiled in memory of John Lavington, Eric Courteney Campbell, and Trevor Stuart Dixon; also a memorial altar cross placed on the reredos by the members of the Bega branch of the Returned Soldiers and Sailors' League in memory of fallen comrades. The service and dedications were performed by the Rector, the Rev. B. D. Bryant, B.D.
