The celebration ball which marked the opening of the Soldiers' Memorial Hall will long be remembered as the largest social gathering the district has known, approximately 450 being in attendance. Town residents turned out en masse, all country centres were well represented, and patrons flocked from districts near and far, including Dululu, Wura, Rannes, Goovigen, Jambin, Biloela, Baralaba. Westwood, Mount Morgan and Rockhampton. To members of the local sub-branch of the R.S.S.I.L.A. the occasion was a particularly happy one. Large Union Jacks and Australian flags draped the rear of the stage and were suspended overhead. Lines of miniature flags above the main body of the hall completed a gay and appropriate decorative scheme. Colourful decorations and beautiful frocks combined to create a spectacular scene early in the evening during the progress of the grand march led by returned soldiers.
The land upon which the Memorial Hall was built had been acquired 20 years ago, but for various reasons the matter of building had not been taken up seriously until two and a half years ago. In reply to criticism of their action in carrying on with the building of the hall after the outbreak of the present war Mr Saunders said that they had given a promise to the boys of the 2nd A.I.F. when they left the district that when they returned victorious they would be welcomed back in the Diggers' Hall. This hall was erected in honour of all who had enlisted from Wowan and district in the war 1914-18, also of all who were enlisting during the present war. Later an honour board would be erected in the hall with all names inscribed thereon.
