The monument commemorates those who undertook National Service in the Australia Defence Forces between 1951 and 1972, and those who served in the Citizen and Reserve Forces.
Between 1951 and 1972, young Australian men were called up in two separate schemes for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force. Of them, 212 died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam. National Service was part of Australia’s defence preparedness for three decades.

This Memorial Is Dedicated To All Those National Servicemen And Reservist Men And Women Who Have Served Australia At Home And Overseas On Active Service.
Between 1951 And 1972 Over 290,000 Men Were Conscripted As National Servicemen. In The Period 1964 To 1972, 63735 Men Were Conscripted For 2 Years In Vietnam 18000 Men Served With Great Distinction, And Of Their Number 143 Were Killed In Action, 28 Died Of Wounds, 1 Missing In Action And 880 Were Wounded.
They Served In All Corps And Without Doubt Performed Admirably Since The Australian Defence Force Reservists Were Re-Activated In 1948 As Citizen Forces Over 1,250000 Men And Women Have Served In The Navy, Army And Air Force Reserves.
They Have Served All Over Australia And In Many Locations Overseas. It Is Only In Recent Times That Governments Have Sent Formed Units Overseas On Active Service But Individuals Have Volunteered For Service In Various Conflicts And Many UN Peace Keeping Operations
