The plaque commemorates the sailing achievements of John Bennetto. The plaque was unveiled in front of the Castray Esplanade finish box in 2008.

Bennetto raced in 44 Sydney to Hobart yacht races. It is a race record and many believe it is unprecedented in world ocean racing. In December 2005, as he prepared to compete in his 45th and the 61st Sydney to Hobart, he passed away at the age of 79.
