Sundial commemorates the champion sculler of the world from 1901 to 1904, and 1906 to 1907.

George Towns was a professional sculler who originally won the title of World Champion in 1901 when he defeated the American J. A. Gaudaur, who had held the title for five years. The match was rowed on the Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada. Towns defended his title successfully against several challengers, in matches on the Parramatta and the Nepean.

He was beaten in 1905 by veteran Australian sculler Jim Stansbury, who had held the title in 1896, but Towns beat Stansbury in a return match in 1906, winning by 25 lengths. George Towns forfeited the title to his brother Charles in 1907 who soon lost it to New Zealander William Webb in August, 1907.
