The monument commemorates the Tasmanian soldiers who died in service or were killed in action in the South African (Boer) War.

The monument is a bronze statue of a colonial soldier standing on a sandstone column. The soldier holds binoculars and has a rifle slung over the left shoulder with the barrel pointing down.

Arrangements for the official unveiling of the statue erected in memory of the brave Tasmanian soldiers who fell in the late South African war are now completed. On Wednesday, the 1st proximo, at 2.30 p.m., the committee of the Tasmanian Soldiers' National Memorial have arranged that the ceremony in connection with the unveiling of the statue, erected in memory of the Tasmanian soldiers who lost their lives during the late South African war, will be performed by His Excellency the Governor (Sir Gerald Strickland, K.C.M.G.) in the Queen's Domain, Hobart.
