The monument commemorates those from the district who died in service or were killed in action during the South African (Boer) War. 

MORTLAKE, Thursday.
The monument erected to Lance-Corporal Duncan Small, Corporal John B. Yates, and Private W. Clarke, who fell in the South Africa war, was unveiled today by Councillor T. Montgomery before an assemblage of over six hundred. The Revs J. Wagg, W. McBride and T.Collins delivered addresses, the local band played several selections, a number of the rifle club members fired a salute, and the school children sang "The Man Behind The Gun. " Votes of thanks were carried specially mentioning Mrs. Walter Hyde, the lady who did most 
towards defraying the cost of the memorial which stands 13ft. high.
