South African (Boer) War MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates the men from the Gippsland District who died in service or were killed in action in the South African (Boer) War.
The ceremony of unveiling the handsome monument that has been erected in the Main street reserve to perpetuate the memory of the brave lads from Gippsland who found graves in South Africa, was performed on Friday at Bairnsdale in the presence of a very large gathering of the residents of the town and district. Dr Duncan, as chairman of the memorial committee, briefly outlined the history of the movement leading up to the erection of the memorial, and then called upon Mr A. M'Lean, M.H.R., to perform the ceremony of unveiling.
