The monument commemorates those who served in World War One and World War Two. It was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One.
The monument carries the words of a poem written by Colonel John McCrae in 1915, referring to the red poppies of Flanders Fields in Belgium, now used extensively on ANZAC Day wreaths and, in particular, on Remembrance Day.
The monument originally held a captured machine gun on the plinth and the gun disappeared sometime in the 1950s.
An `Australia Remembers` plaque was added in 1995.
