Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Geeveston CenotaphPrint Page
Geeveston Cenotaph commemorates the fallen of both World Wars. The monument was originally unveiled in 1923 to commemorate the fallen from Liverpool, Geeveston and Surges Bay Wards. The names of the fallen from World War Two were added to the memorial at a later date. The memorial also contains an Australia Remembers plaque dedicated to those who served in the Second World War.
Despite the fact that the war memorial erected at Geeveston in honour of the soldiers from the Liverpool, Geeveston, and Surges Bay wards of the Esperance municipality who fell in the Great War had been completed for some time, it was not until Anzac Day that the official unveiling ceremony took place. The structure is very imposing figure of an Australian soldier with rifle reversed, standing on a base of black polished granite, quarried in New South Wales. The figure, which is 5ft 6in. in height, was made in Italy, of Sicilian marble. The steps and pillars are of trachyte granite. The whole structure is surrounded at a distance of about 4ft. by a neat wire fence, which gives just the necessary finish. The total cost was £575 10s.
The Mercury (Hobart), 26th April 1923.
