The cairn commemorates Frederick Dutton and others who camped on the creek in 1854 and were the first prospectors in the St. Arnaud area.

This cairn is formed by a truncated masonry pyramid with dark stone veneer cladding and an arrow fixed to the top pointing in the direction of the creek where gold was first prospected in the district.
