William`s Town Jetty – Gem Pier

150th Anniversary 1838 – 1988

A stone jetty 110 feet in length to service local shipping planned in 1837 was constructed during 1838 – 39 close to this site.  Various improvements and wooden extensions were made in later years including the present pier.  The nearby Commonwealth Reserve area was filled and created during the 1880`s.

The name Gem Pier is derived form the paddle steamer Gem built in 1868 which ran regularly across Hobson`s Bay to Sandridge, now Port Melbourne, for 40 years.
