Pioneer Steamer Fire Fly , 1838
150th Anniversary 1988
On the 28th October, 1838, the small paddle steamer Fire Fly of four horse power, opened by Captain Slyvester Brown commenced running a daily service between William`s Town and Melbourne, leaving from near this site.
The Fire Fly was the first steam powered vessel owned at Melbourne and she operated as a ferry around this port until withdrawn in the 1840’s.
The vessel was constr7ucted at Sydney and brought to Port Phillip as deck cargo, on the barque Denmark Hill.
