The monument was erected as a Bicentennial project to commemorate 100 years of gold discovery in the Southern Cross region from 1888 to 1988 and the Bicentenary of Australia from 1788 to 1988. 

It was erected by Yilgarn Bicentennial Committee funded by The Australian Bicentennial Authority, the Yilgarn Shire Council and local volunteers.
