Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

100 Years of Rail ServicesPrint Page
The plaque commemorates 100 years of railway services from 1883 to 1983 to Goorambat, Devenish and St. James.
In the last days of 1880, the Railway Construction Bill was passed by the Victorian Parliament approving construction of a number of railway lines including one from Benalla terminating in the Parish of St James. There were to be three main stations on the line, Goorambat, Devenish and St James, but the termination point was not at an existing town. The future town of St James was to be built around the railway station. The line took one year to build and the first train pulled into St James on September 3, 1883.
