The monument commemorates surfer Creed Barnes who died while surfing in the Margaret River region in 1989.
The tragedy struck on the eve of the Margaret River Masters in 1989 when Creed Barnes drowned after his leash became snared on a shallow rock ledge.

Creed lost his life in pursuit of a dream.
He died on the rise, mixing it with heroes while surfing the dangerous waters of Margaret River.
He was a gifted and talented surfer, who's love of life and happy fun loving nature touched all who knew him well.
Dedicated by all those who share his love of surfing.
In death he lives eternal.
Man has spirit and his spirit lives with us.
