The hut commemorates Charles Henry Derrick, who set off on a solo cross country ski run from Mountain Creek in 1965 with the objective of ski-ing the fifty-two kilometres to Mount Hotham in a single day, but he failed and perished in the bad weather. 

The hut is located at the end of the 8.1km walking track which commences in the Mount Loch Car Park
