Georgina Gadsen, Edward Welch & John McRaePrint Page
The cairn commemorates Georgina Gadsen, Edward Welch and John McRae who perished during a blizzard in August 1943.
In early August 1943, McRae, Welch and Gadsden, all experienced skiers, left Bivouac Hut in poor weather for the old Summit hut en route to Cleve Cole hut.
They were later found dead just short of the Summit hut. They were experienced, well equipped and fit. They had judged the conditions and believed themselves capable of reaching Summit Hut. It was a cruel stroke of misfortune that the conditions overtook them within 80 yards of their goal. Georgina Gadsen was the daughter of a prominent Melbourne businessman.
