The memorial was erected in 1955 by the friends of Nelson Joseph (Joey) Flynn who died in 1947 after being hit by a cricket ball. Joey was a member of the Kensington United Cricket Club.

Nelson Joseph Flynn, tram employee, of Kingsford, collapsed and died when struck under the heart by a ball while fielding in a match at Moore Park.
