It was resolved on the motion of Mr. J. B. Taylor that a committee be appointed for the purpose of building a stone church." Extract from the minutes of the Gerringong Church Committee of the 26 - 8 - 1880. Fr. M. Keogan presiding.
The Church of St Mary Star of the Sea was blessed and opened by Archbishop Vaughan on the 6th August 1862. Fr. M. Keogan P.P.
The stone church replaced a small wooden church built in 1804.
The Church was extended to more than double its size in 1995. Blessed by Bishop P Wilson 11th August 1996. Fr. P. Kenna P.P.
The meeting room was built in 1987, and blessed by Bishop W. Murray. Fr. P. Kenna P.P.

To commemorate the Jubilee Year 2000 the garden was established to the young of the church who lost their lives in road accidents. Fr. P. Kenna P.P.

With the families who mourn for them we the community of St Mary, Star of the Sea Gerringong remember in prayer these young Australians who met their death in local road accidetns and whose funeral rites were celebrated in this church.
