The oval was named on the 15 March 1992 by Mrs. Linda Cotterell wife of Sqnldr. Mal Cotterell.
Mal, a Flight Commander at the Central Flying School, in the company of his student Capt. Mohd Tadjudin RMAF, died in a PC9 crash on the 5 August 1991.
Mal was a keen member of the R.A.A.F. East Sale Hockey Club.
