Arthur BeetsonPrint Page
The plaque commemorates rugby league footballer Arthur Beetson (1945 -2011).
Arthur Beetson was big and powerful, but it was his uncanny skills that convinced many in his own day that he was the best ever rugby league forward of this type. Beetson played first grade rugby league from 1966 to 1981, appeared in 14 Tests and led Queensland to victory in the first State of Origin match in 1980. Beetson became the first Indigenous Australian to captain his country in any sport.
Arthur Beetson grew up in the 1950s, in the central Queensland town of Roma. His father cut wood for a living, and his mother was a victim of the Stolen Generation.
