The cairn was erected to commemorate James and Mary Dunn; the first European settlers in Balaklava in 1847 who built a hotel near the site.
The first settlers in Balaklava were James and Mary Dunn, who came from Burra in 1847 and built Dunn's Hotel on the Balaklava - Hoyleton Road in 1850.

They Built A Hotel Adjacent To This Site
To Cater For Bullock Teamsters Who
Carted Ore From Burra To Port Wakefield
Unveiled By A Grandson Professor S. S. Dunn
On 13th August 1973.
This Cairn Was Donated And Erected By
The Balaklava And District Lions Club
For The District Council Of Balaklava.
