The monument commemorates naturalist, George Gossip.
George Gossip was President of the Ararat Field Naturalists Club and spent his life in Ararat and was heavily involved in organisations which promoted the development and improvement of the town. He was an authority on native flora of Australia and was trustee of the Macdonald Park Wildflower Sanctuary. He died in 1939 at the age of 66.
