The plaque commemorates George Rowland Button, a former head teacher of the Anakie school who was killed at Wilmansrust , South Africa , on the 12th June 1901 during the Boer War. 

A tablet has been erected in the Anakie State school in memory of the late Lance Corporal George Button, of the 5th Victorian Contingent, who was killed at Wilmansrust on 12th June last. Prior to his departure to South Africa. Mr. Button was head teacher of the Anakie school. The tablet, which was erected by his many friends in the district, bears the inscription, "My duty called me."
