The tree commemorates Private Frank Colin Ross who was killed in action on 25 February 1917 in France during World War One.

The original plaque was uncovered in 1974 during road works for the Monash Freeway. In 2006 Vic Roads made repairs to the original concrete setting made by Country Roads Board and set the two plaques on a wider concrete base.
