The marble plaque commemorates Lieutenant Edward Murray Tupper (Royal Navy), and Seaman William Kennedy, both of Her Majesty`s ship "Iris" who were killed by locals of Tana whilst on service on shore in 1858.

Dedication
Sacred to the memory of Lieut. Edward Murray Tupper, R.N.
Aged 22 years
And
William Kennedy,
Seaman,
Aged 43 years.
Both of H.M. Ship "Iris", who were killed by the natives of Tana on the 1st July 1858, whilst on service on shore.
This tablet was erected by the Officers as a mark of their respect and esteem.
