The laurel tree commemorates Lieutenant Henry Francis Grey who died of illness during World War Two. The tree stands in a garden bed in the grounds of Christ Church. In April 2004 it appeared to be dying from drought conditions but has started growing again.
Henry Francis Grey was born in Canberra on 24 August 1917 and enlisted in Sydney on 26 October 1939. He was a Lieutenant in the 2nd / 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion when he died of illness on 5 December 1940. He is buried in St John`s Churchyard, Canberra.
