The plaque commemortes Gunner Karl Maynard Delahunt Matthews who was killed in action in France in January 1917 during World War One.
A former Hay resident, and at one time on the staff of the Commercial Bank at Hay, has laid down his life for his country. Gunner Karl Matthews, youngest son of Mr. James Delahunt Matthews, chemist, Blayney, has been killed in action in France. Gunner Matthews was 25 years of age, and at the time of his enlistment was employed at the Commercial Bank, Cessnock. Letters received from him show that the deceased went to France, and was in the trenches two months before being killed.
