The tree commemorates Able Seaman Edgar W. D. Hopley who was killed when H.M.A.S. Yarra sank in the Indian Ocean in March 1942 during World War Two. Of the complement of 151, 138 (including the captain and all officers) were killed in the action or died subsequently on the raft.

Note: The plaque incorrectly states "Eric W. D. Hopley".
