The monument commemorates John Robert Black, Russell Edward Johnston and Theodore William Penn who were members of the Royal Australian Air Force and died when the aeroplane they were flying on patrol crashed in April 1942.

who died when their R.A.A.F. Airspeed Oxford AT439 aircraft crashed 5 km N.E. of Beech Forest on Sunday 12th April 1942 at 11.05 am.

They departed Point Cook Airbase and were conducting a patrol when they crashed in low visibility.
