The marble tablet, erected by the citizens of Dunolly, commemorates John James Costelloe who was wounded and died from his injuries during the South African (Boer) War.
John Costelloe who served in the 5th Contingent Victorian Mounted Rifles (V.M.R.) was wounded at Middle Kraal and died of his injuries at Middleburg Hospital on the 5th July 1901.
Dunolly, Tuesday. A tablet erected in the council chambers to the memory of Private John Costelloe was unveiled by the Mayor (Cr. J. Desmond) yesterday in the presence of a large attendance. Private Costelloe was a member of the Fifth Victorian Contingent, and was killed on 5th July last. Deceased was a native of Dunolly.
