The monument commemorates Captain C. M. Stevenson who served in the South African (Boer) War.
The handsome monument erected by the past and present members of the local Militia Infantry Company to the memory of late O.C. will be unveiled on Saturday next, the 29th inst., at about 3 p.m. So widely popular and highly esteemed was the late Captain Stevenson that about two dozen officers, not only of his own Regiment but of other military units, have signified tlieir intention of being present. It is expected that the ceremony of unveiling will be performed by Colonel Ranclaud, V.D., the Officer Commanding the 1st Infantry Brigade, and who, up to within the last week or so, acted as Commandant of the whole military forces of the State. The fine band of the Second Regiment will also be in attendance.
