The headstone over the grave commemorates Albert Ross Hovell, master mariner, who died in 1888.  He was the son of William Hovell who discovered the Murray River with Hamilton Hume.

Thus the Cooktown Courier: "Another good man has gone from our midst in the person of Captain Albert Ross Hovell, who died in the Cook District Hospital on Sunday, May 6. The deceased was a son of Captain Hovell, R.N. , the companion of Hume, the explorer, and discoverer of the Murray River. Captain A. R. Hovell was a native of Sydney, and 20 years ago was one of the most respected foreign going shipmasters out of Sydney. "
