The rotunda commemorates Queen Victoria who reigned from 1837 to 1901.
The plaque on the rotunda gives the date as the 26th January 1907 and the rotunda was opened on the evening of the 28th January which was the Foundation Holiday.
Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she adopted the additional title of Empress of India. With a reign of 63 years, seven months and two days, Victoria was the longest -reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history until her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her on 9 September 2015.
Queen Victoria`s birthday, 24th May, used to be called `Empire Day`. There were special assemblies at school with songs praising the British Empire. Children were then given a half-day holiday. Up to the 1950s, Empire Day was celebrated in Australia with huge bonfires and fireworks.
Murtoa, Tuesday. When the death of Queen Vitoria was announced a public meeting was held here for the purpose of collecting funds for erecting a memorial; a committee was appointed, and about £100 was collected. Since that time very little interest appears to have been taken in the movement, and the money is lying in the bank. A number of subscribers to the fund have expressed displeasure at this apathy and inactivity, and at the last meeting of the agricultural and pastoral society the matter was discussed. It was agreed that the money could be spent to better advantage, and it was decided that the rotunda committee be requested to call a meeting of subscribers and endeavour to obtain their consent for the money to ho used in the building of a grand stand in the agricultural society's show ground.

The annual meeting of the Progress Committee has been held at which the report of the President Dr Rabl was received and a vote of thanks passed. It showed that the income from all sources last year was £153 3s, including the amount collected for the Queen Victoria Rotunda, while the expenditure had been £136 4s 8d (rotunda £75) leaving a balance in hand of £16 8s 4d. The rotunda is to be opened on the evening of Monday 28th (Foundation Holiday) when a moonlight concert will be given.
