The Bob Gates Memorial Recreation Reserve commemorates former Mayor I. R. (Bob) Gates` contribution to the development of Lismore Lake. Bob Gates died in 2003.
In February 2004 Lismore City Council agreed to rename the area "The Bob Gates Memorial Recreational Reserve" and the lake itself to be called Lake Gates. Mr Gates served as a councillor for seven years, three of them as the city's mayor. Before his election, he was the deputy engineer and had worked for the council for over 30 years.
