The plaque commemorates pastoralist and politician Sir John Hay (1816 - 1892). 

He was a Scots-born pastoralist, businessman, quiet philanthropist and long-serving parliamentarian of colonial New South Wales, who had connections with a number of properties situated within the Municipality of Woollahra.

 The Woollahra Council Plaque Scheme honours exceptional people or events associated with our local government area, that have made a significant impact on life in the area or Australia as a nation.
