The monument commemorates the Croatian martyr who was the Archbishop of Zagreb and the Primate of Croatia.
Cardinal Stepinac (8 May 1898 –10 February 1960) was a Croatian Catholic Cardinal and Archbishop of Zagreb from 1937 to 1960. In 1998 he was declared a martyr and beatified by Pope John Paul II.

This monument was erected by the Croatian community of Victoria
In memory of His Eminence Dr. Aloysius Card. Stepinac Archbishop of Zagreb and Primate of Croatia on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of his martyrs death.
The monument was blessed and unveiled on 4th April 1965 by the Most Rev J D Simonds D D Ph. D Archbishop of Melbourne.
