The plaque commemorates explorer Matthew Flinders, who was the first European to explore in this area in 1802. The inscription on the plaque states that it was unveiled on Pioneers Day in April 1948 but the plaque was unveiled on the institute building in June 1948.

Commander of H.M. Sloop "Investigator"
On 8 March 1802 discovered and named Elbow Hill and recorded a lagoon visible from the masthead.
In April 1840 Governor Col. Geo. Gawler when in the District applied the names Lakes Flinders and Franklin Harbour after officers of the "Investigator."
