The sundial commemorates Major John Waters who was a teacher at the Geelong Road State School between 1878 and 1895.
The Old Boys Association of the school erected the sundial which was unveiled by Mrs Waters, also a teacher at the school. It is a Harcourt grey granite pedestal surmounted by a polished bronze sundial. Major Waters also had a long association with the Commonwealth Cadet Corps, and became commander of 53 Infantry Battalion in 1911.
