Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The Conference Room and commemorative plaque in Fairfield Police Station commemorate David Carty who was stabbed and killed while off duty in Sydney. The room was dedicated on the 20th anniversary of his death. David Carty was stationed at Fairfield Police Station.
Constable Carty died after being attacked in the car park of the Cambridge Tavern, Fairfield, in the early hours of April 18, 1997. The 25-year-old had been out with other off-duty police after finishing his midnight shift. When he was leaving the tavern he was confronted by a group of men who fatally stabbed him in the chest and then kicked, punched and stomped on him as he lay dying on the ground.
Gilbert Adam was found guilty of murder and sentenced to a maximum 28 years` jail. His co-accused, brother Richard Adam, successfully appealed a sentence for inflicting grievous bodily harm and walked free. Amier Yaco, James George and Eshmail Esha were acquitted for their alleged parts in the attack. Edward Esho was sentenced to a maximum six years and eight months and Thamier Sako was given a maximum five years` jail for inflicting grievous bodily harm. At the time the court was told Esho had been "chipped" by Constable Carty earlier in the evening and he later confronted the officer with two other men and incited the violence.
During the special service for the 20th anniversary of the death of Constable Carty today, Fairfield police announced that the station conference room would now would be known as the David Carty Conference Room in honour of their fallen colleague. Fairfield Commander Detective Superintendent Peter Lennon said it was important for all members of the Fairfield LAC, local area command, and the wider police community, to recognised recognise the sacrifice every officer makes as they went about their duties.
During the ceremony with attending dignitaries, a commemorative plaque was unveiled in the room which contained a description of how Constable Carty died.
The inscription concluded: “Constable Carty served the community faithfully and paid the ultimate price.”
