The tombstone erected by fellow employees and friends commemorates William Robertson, a gripman who died on the 14th January 1897. 

The profession of 'gripman' referred to on the tombstone was that of the man who operated the 'grip' on a cable tram which gripped the moving cable running underneath the street.
