The garden commemorates John Charles Boyes for his services to the community. The plaque is located in shrubbery opposite Mount Morgan Soldiers Rooms in Morgan Street.
During World War Two, John Boyes served on the local committee associated with war work. From 1933 to 1950 he was an active member of the Mount Morgan RSL Sub-Branch. He died in 1951.
The annual meeting of the Mt Morgan branch of the RSSAILA was held in the Soldiers' Rooms. The president (Mr W. G. Clewes) presided. There was a fair attendance of members. The president, in his report, stated that during the past year membership declined slightly compared with the previous year. Finances had improved despite heavy payments for insurance. The insurance on the hall was raised to £4500. A permit was obtained to secure roofing iron and when this iron comes to hand it is proposed to repair and paint the hall. During the year death claimed three members, including Mr J. C. Boyes, a gold badge member and a tireless worker for the league and the town. The league was cooperating with the Horticultural Society in making a garden plot in the front of the hall to be known as J. C. Boyes Memorial Plot. The customary commemorations were held during the year on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. An opportunity was also given during the year to express the league's loyalty in the form of a Jubilee message to the Prime Minister. The league and its members had continued to take an active part in the affairs of the town and district and the Mt Morgan branch was truly representative of all ex servicemen.
