The park and memorial gates commemorate Robert Ernest Alcorn for his services to the community. The park was renamed Alcorn Memorial Park and the memorial gates were officially unveiled on the 28th September 1935. 

ALCORN MEMORIAL At a meeting of subscribers to the Alcorn Memorial, held at Kyogle Shire Chambers on Thursday afternoon, the site of the memorial gates was altered from the recreation reserve to the park. The proceedings were held in committee, the press being excluded, but at the conclusion of the meeting a statement was issued by the secretary (Mr. C. G. McKee).  A committee, comprising Messrs. A. J. Junor, G. F Denning and J. Martin was appointed to confer with the Shire Council regarding the design, and it was decided to request the Council to alter the name of the park to Alcorn Park.

On September 8, 1933, the death occurred of one of Kyogle's leading citizens, Mr. Robert Ernest Alcorn, who for more more than 30 years had been part and parcel of the town and district. The public was quick to realise the loss sustained by his death and steps were immediately taken to perpetuate his memory in a tangible manner. A meeting was called on September 16 and it was unanimously decided "to take definite steps to perpetuate the memory of the late R. E. Alcorn." By November well over £100, subscribed by district and North Coast residents, to erect a memorial entrance at the Kyogle Park, was in hand, and it was decided to proceed with the erection of the gates. Early this year the work was carried out and tomorrow at 2.30 p.m., the gates will be unveiled and officially named the Alcorn Memorial Gates. The late Mr. Alcorn's passing came as a severe blow to the whole district for which he had done so much.
