The memorial was erected over the grave in memory of Rochfort Charles Paynter, former secretary of the New South Wales Government Railways Permanent Way and Signalling Branch Association, who died in 1926.

About 200 members of the New South Wales Government Railways Permanent Way and Signalling Branch Association and other railway employees were present last Sunday at the unveiling in Woronora Cemetery Sutherland of a striking memorial to the late Mr. Rochfort Charles Paynter, who for many years was general secretary of the association, and who died on October 31, 1926. Mr. Paynter was for many years a resident of Rockdale, and for a long time secretary of the Queen's Jubilee Lodge. The ceremony was performed by the president of the association (Mr. J. G. Ellis).A religious service was conducted by the Rev.H. G. Robins.
