The memorial was erected over the grave in memory of Richard Austen, former president and treaasurer of the Band Association of New South Wales who died in 1924. 

The unveiling of the memorial erected to the memory of the late Richard Austen, who was treasurer of the Band Association of New South Wales for many years, will take place on Sunday, at Woronora Cemetery at 3.15. The music for the ceremony will be supplied by massed bands of Kogarah, Rockdale and Hurstville, and the ceremony will be performed by the president and vice-president of the association. All bandsmen and friends are invited to be present.
