The memorial over the grave was erected in memory of Matthew Prideaux, Grand Secretary and Past Master of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows who died in 1899.
Yesterday afternoon was unveiled in Rookwood Cemetery the monument erected by the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows to the memory of their late grand secretary and Past Master Matthew Prideaux. The function was attended by a representative assembly of the executives of the chief friendly societies in Sydney, including Bro. John Gardner (G.M., M.U.I.O.O.F.), Bros. F. T. Gibbons and Kenneth M'Kenzie, P.G.M.s, of the same order, and co-workers with the deceased officer, Brother Fitzpatrick (G.M, I.O.O.F.), Bro. H. Heron (G.S., G.U.O.O.F.), Major Wilson (G.S. A.O.U.D.), and Mr. F. W. Schey, all of whom spoke eugolistically of the brother and friend whose memory they had met to honor. Mr. Alexander Ketbel, M.L.C., Mr. C. W. Carpenter (superintendent of the Boys' Brigade), and many others also assisted. The monument, a column of black Scandinavian granite, surmounted by an urn, was executed by Messrs. H. Taylor and Son, of Elizabeth-street, and Grand Sec. Bro. Thomas Kemp acted as master of the ceremonies.
