To commemorate the public spirited action of John Hector Esq. of St. Leonards
Who on 28 - 12 - 1857 gave this piece of land to the Mayor, Aldermen, Councillors and Burgesses of the town of Glenelg so that the "Old Gum Tree" might be preserved and protected.
This memorial was erected in appreciation 1945
